Northside senior linebacker Trey Payne had a hand in about a dozen tackles to lead an Eagles defense that allowed less than 150 yards of total offense.
“The defensive line played a great game (Friday),” Payne said. “They freed me up so I could make plays.”
One of Payne’s biggest plays came late in the first quarter with Northside holding a 10-0 lead. Houston County quarterback Taylor Boyett rolled right and tried to complete a pass on third down inside his own 20. The ball went right to Payne, who intercepted it at the 25 and returned it to inside the Houston County 10.
“That was just being in the right place at the right time,” Payne said.
A few plays later, Northside quarterback Glenn Smith scored on a 4-yard run to push the Eagles’ lead to 17-0 after the first quarter.
Boyett injured himself tackling Payne on the interception play. He did not return to action. Instead, Houston County platooned sophomore Zach Taisler and freshman Ivan Corbin at quarterback. Taisler ran nine times for 24 yards. Corbin completed 2-of-11 passes for 33 yards.
Northside (5-0, 2-0) is 15-0 all-time in the series. The Bears (2-3, 0-2) have managed just 17 points in the past eight meetings combined.
